Happy Birthday, Yobo!

It was my sweetie's birthday yesterday. It was Furlough Friday for him & he was not complaining. No need work on your birthday. How fun. He started the day at the archery range with the boys & came home in time to bid Harriet, Jim & Keiki alohas as they were being picked up by a shuttle to the airport for their new home in Las Vegas. Alisa & Nysa took him to lunch at McDonald's in Mauka. He then played golf with Dean Sawaguchi (& won) then met up with the rest of us for dinner at Waimalu Chop Suey. We have great memories of Waimalu--a favorite place in years gone by. Good food, reasonably priced. It was always there that there was a 'taste the mustard/shoyu' challenge. Someone would fall for it--maybe they were trying to humor him. Clarissa, Ashley & Lindsey had to work. We made plates for the wives & the Greigs took home the rest. Nysa had to wear her bridesmaid's outfit from Savers & show the veil & bouquet her mommy had made. It is a very nice dress & fits her perfectly. Kwyn had her Rainbow brite 'leggings' (actually Ayva's socks with the toes cut off).

The rest of the kiddies were just happy to be there. After the meal we all drove over to Life Touch where Clarissa works & they had a Haunted House for employees & friends. That was fun. Cliff will run the camera at tonight's service so we won't be able to gather with the kiddies in their costumes until after church. Maybe they can come over for cake.

We're playing with our new G1 phones. It was our birthday gift to each other. It's amazing to be able to read/send your e-mails, check out facebook, listen to music away from the computer. I'm busy trying to get all my contacts into my gmail account from Yahoo. He ordered us covers from ebay--mine is zebra print again.

Is there such a thing as having a blessed Halloween? I remember dressing up as a bunny, an indian girl, a clown when I was young. It was so fun & the candy was the best part. Mom made the kids costumes growing up--which turned into pajamas the next day--she was always practical. Evil was only 'allowed/tolerated' for one night (it seemed) & every thing went back to normal--in my safe little world. Today, evil is being celebrated the year around & innocent children don't know the difference. I dislike Halloween but understand a child's excitement to dress up/be someone else & enjoy the candy. Anyway, Have a Blessed Halloween!

Well, I finally did it. I was just sharing with Kanani when she was here about a month ago that I would never get involved with Facebook despite the urging of family & friends. I was quite proud of the fact that I had held out for so long. She hasn't made that move either & we had that in common. I guess I had a baaad impression of ---- I can't remember the name. Oh yeah, MySpace. I felt there was too much stuff on there that was often negative & anyone could have access to it. I could be wrong but I'm glad I never was interested in that.

So I was encouraged to join since Keiki was going to create a Higa Ohana page. I did it. I'm still cautious about the whole thing but was able to post an encouragement to Keoki today. It was two weeks ago, after our Joy Luck lunch at my house that Ashley got the call from Keoki that his good friend & mentor had just died from a heart attack. Bob was such a good guy. He took their wedding videos, helped at Logan's first birthday party & many times inbetween, before & after. Those were the two times I had seen him. I picked some rainbow plumerias from my tree to take down to the Relay for Life. I saw the flyer for Bob's Farewell on facebook & people were encouraged to bring a fresh lei. I realized that I had been blessed to have so many beautiful blooms to share for such a time as this. I knew it would be a special time--both Keoki & Ashley & those involved in the Hawaii film industry had spent countless hours preparing a fitting tribute to Bob's life & contribution. I even saw some pictures of Bob on Tim Savage's facebook page.

Went to our church (Hope Chapel West Oahu) & felt called to sign up to help with refreshments for early services. They have a nice selection of breakfast type things for before & after the first two services & then lunchie stuff after the 11 am service. One guy has been doing it by himself for several weeks now. So I introduced myself to Jeff who's been doing it & will make cinnamon mini bagel toasts--or as Logan calls it, Circle Toast for next week. We exchanged phone numbers & even mentioned facebook & he said lots of church people are on there too. I'll have to check it out.

Our new church will tentatively begin services on August 1 & 2. The building is awesome. God has provided & He is to be praised! Clifford has helped a lot in some of the construction of the stage & is relied on heavily for electrical wiring. He's spent many hours on the lift, cutting wood & setting screws. It's a blessing to see how God uses each of us in different ways when we're willing.

Grateful for a New Year

Wow! It's 2009 already. Grateful to have survived 2008. I've learned a lot about my faith & hope in the Lord. In the last months of the year, I have done a lot of soul searching--why do I do what I do; spending choices--do I really need that/can I do without?; use of time--am I watching too much Korean?; limits on the computer game playing; am I allowing God to use me to bless others?

It's been a great challenge for me to stop & listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit as I've been led to make a phone call, e-mail, bake cookies for someone. I've come to realize that's what I'm here for. Nancy Kekoa taught me a short song a long time ago. "Jesus, Others & You spells JOY." It's true. In that order. Another chorus I learned was,

"Why worry, when you can pray?

Trust Jesus, He'll be your stay.

Don't be a doubting Thomas,

Look fully on His Promise.

Why worry, worry, worry, worry,

When you can pray?"

Today is Dad Smith's Birthday. And Kealani's. I'll call her. Mailed a package to Mema Gayle in North Carolina on Thursday. Her Birthday is on Monday but I don't think the Post Office is delivering mail--Martin Luther King Holiday. Hopefully she'll get it on Tuesday--Inauguration Day. I didn't vote for him but I must pray that he will seek God's help to run the country.

It's a beautiful day. Clifford is cutting grass & weed wacking. It's been several weeks of rainy days & everything is very green. My white pirie tree has been giving me many lucious fruit lately. I thought it unusual to have mangoes in January but realized that it coinsided with our church-wide 9 day fast. We did the Daniel Fast--only fruits, vegetables, nuts & grains. No sugar, caffeine, fried, meat, dairy. It was pretty hard but we got used to it & found some 'new' things to eat. Brown rice, tofu, soy beans, kashi, (with skim milk). I helped to have a lot of mangoes--it was my blessing. I was able to share with my co workers, at Ayva's birthday & at church on Sunday morning. The last five fruits (for now) are in the refrigerator. There are little mangoes on the tree & some flowers.
